MTA licensed to kill...

As I waited the usual 30 minutes for the N4 at Jamaica Center tonight, IF I was drinking with the boys after work and there was a brick around I might have hurled it at the bus as it pulled up, the driver smirking, fully cognizant that the 6:49 and 7:04 would be pulling up any minute.....

According to Heather Haddon in today's am-ny:

In a Halloween prank turned tragic, an MTA bus driver struck and killed a Bronx man who had just thrown a heavy object at the vehicle, shattering part of the front window.

Ms Haddon goes on to say that "[t]he incident was ruled an accident and the driver...was not charged."

Over the summer, some kids were walking their puppy down Merrick Boulevard and it bolted into the street...the bus I was on ran over it, and THAT never made the papers, which is understandable. From the tone of Ms Haddon's article, Luis Rivera was a BAD puppy, and since the MTA had enacted Operation Pumpkin Patch--"designed to raise awareness among drivers of their rights in case they are attacked" [all emphasis mine]--for doing what kids have been doing for over half a century!

Election Eve, and all these newspapers that found it fit to endorse Herr Mayor-for-Life Bloomberg don't think that some Hispanic kid getting intentionally run over by a bus driver in the Bronx even worth a paragraph? [Full disclosure--am-ny is owned by Newsday/Cablevision--so THAT may explain why they're not beholden to NYC/Bloomberg ]

Guess Kathy Jordan and Dominique Sharpton's bust this weekend is more important than some Hispanic kid throwing, maybe, a beer bottle or egg at a bus and getting running over by its driver

Witam wszystkich!

Slaveshipping on the MTA

Although I can completely bypass the E train on the way home, today curiousity got the better of me and I decided to see why it takes that train so long to get to Jamaica Center from the city.

I boarded the train at the WTC station, and it left at approximately 5:28 PM this evening.

Was surprised that a lot of people got off on 42nd Street and there was seats for everyone...wasn't surprised when we sat at Fifth Avenue for over twenty minutes!!! Once we got to Lexington, the train filled up like a slave ship, and proceeded to move like a rickshaw

The coup d'etat came at Forest Hills/71 Avenue @ 6:44 PM, a full sixteen minutes after it was due at Jamaica Center, on a bad day, and the conductor whispered that the E train would be running down the F line to 179th Street, a common practice when those transit workers want to screw you over.

Of course, I asked the conductor why the change, and since there's no accountability, he ignored me

Miraculously, another E train came shortly afterwards...and since it was not slave ship full, I can see why they changed the E I was on into an F

A Mussolini for Mayor campaign is sounding good right now, at least he ran the trains on time

Daz I-Kue is one of the founding members of seminal broken beat group Bugz in the Attic. He is known for his exceptional taste in music, his broad approach to sets (diversity is the key word when describing a Daz I-Kue set!) and his love of the groove. As a producer, he is known for his remixes of house tracks that turn the original into an eclectic version of its former self, calling on his vast knowledge of funk, soul, and r&b to give his remixes depth and timelessness.
The $157 million plot was allegedly put in motion by KeySpan, former owners of the Ravenswood generators in Astoria. Con Ed customers in the city were soaked for at least $119 million in the scheme, and upstaters were taken for another $38 million.

The real take likely was much more. The $157 million estimate -- by a consultant hired by angry Con Ed execs -- covers only the first year of the alleged scam, which ran from May 2006 to February 2008.
KeySpan's new owner, National Grid, has agreed with the US Justice Department to pay a measly $12 million fine. A Manhattan federal judge still has to sign off on the deal.
KeySpan and its Queens competitor, Astoria Energy, both made out in a "wealth transfer from consumers to suppliers" that was "dramatic," a Con Ed consultant told the feds.

The 12 Biggest ripoffs in America

Many of us feel ripped off in our day to day spending, so much so that bringing up even a single rip-off story in a group of people is likely to trigger a flood of them from everyone else. Whether it’s at the movies, in restaurants or on vacation, we seldom believe we are getting as much for our money as we ought to. Of course, some rip-off stories are more debatable than others. Often times, what is called a ripoff is little more than someone’s subjective opinion of what they “really” deserve for their money, whatever that means. However, other purchases actually do appear, by all objective criteria, to be a raw deal just about all the time. Today, BillShrink analyzes 12 common ripoffs that most of our readers are likely to be well acquainted with.

Movie Theater Popcorn

Movie theater popcorn is as much an American icon as baseball and apple pie. Like a moth to its flame, movie-goers instinctively load up on hot, buttery popcorn before sitting down to enjoy the show. It’s hard to imagine things being any other way. That being said, movie theater popcorn is without question one of the biggest, most egregious ripoffs around. ABC News reported in July 2008 that a small bucket of movie theater popcorn will run you “around $5.50 — more per ounce than filet mignon.” University of California-Irvine professor Richard McKenzie, who wrote a book on this very subject, conjectures that popcorn costs less than ten cents an ounce to produce. That makes the markup somewhere between 900%-1,300%! The reason appears to be that movie theaters do not make much money on actual ticket sales. According to McKenzie, “the theater can be paying 70 or more percent of the ticket price to the studios.” That leaves concessions, like popcorn and candy, as the next logical place to raise prices and recoup some of the revenue being sacrificed at the ticket counter.

Text Messages

Another ripoff most of us would hate to go without is text messaging. According to Srinivasan Keshav, a computer scientist who testified before the Senate on the matter during summer 2009, text messages cost about one third of a cent each for a carrier to deliver. But despite that cost, the typical pay-per-text plan whacks cell phone users to the tune of twenty cents and ten cents per each outgoing and incoming text, respectively. That equates to an eye-popping markup of 6,500%. Nor do unlimited texting plans completely eliminate the ripoff factor, since the carrier’s overhead is likely to be right around the $10 or so that is usually charged for such plans. Most of the time, the carrier comes out ahead regardless.

College Textbooks

College textbooks have the unique feature of being a ripoff on at least two different dimensions. First is the price charged to students. CNN cites a study by the Government Accountability Office showing that “textbook prices nearly tripled from 1986 to 2004 — a jump that’s twice the rate of annual inflation over the last two decades.” In fact, the average estimated cost of books and supplies in a given college year is $900, and many students report paying far more than that. However, it’s not just the actual price of the textbooks. In many college courses, the textbooks are never or seldom even used! Savvy college students have found that they can often glean the material needed from the Internet, or simply by looking on with a friend on rare days when the text is being used by the professor. It’s bad enough to be gouged at the checkout counter, but to rarely even use the textbooks takes the ripoff factor to new heights!

Branded Painkillers

Brand name, over-the-counter painkillers like Advil are sold at a 60% markup, according to Yahoo! Finance. Many will no doubt counter this fact by objecting that yes, the price is higher, but the pain relief is superior. But this is incorrect. As Yahoo explains, the law requires all generic drugs to be just as effective (and even use the exact same active ingredients) as the branded drugs they are modeled after. Yet still, a 50 tablet bottle of 200mg Advil somehow costs $8.49, while Duane Reade charges “just $5.29 for the exact same bottle of generic ibuprofen.” So unlike the age-old “store brand” debate where there is a qualitative difference between a generic and branded product, painkillers are the rare exception of being, literally, the very same product for a lower price.

“Free” Credit Reports

Admit it – you’ve found yourself humming one of those catchy FreeCreditReport.com commercials at least once or twice. But while the commercials are memorable, the service being offered – allegedly “free” access to your credit report – is an unmitigated ripoff. For one thing, it’s questionable that there is a need for any business to offer such a service, as the government mandates that all consumers can check their credit score once a year for free anyway. Beyond that, most of these services unwittingly bilk people into signing up for paid monthly subscriptions that actually charge them for what was supposedly being offered free. Time Magazine reported in November 2009 that the government went so far as to issue public warnings that FreeCreditReport.com and their ilk were not free at all. When you charge money despite the word “free” being in your corporate name, it’s tough to argue that your service isn’t a ripoff to consumers.

Wine Service at Restaurants

This ripoff rests upon a shrewd appraisal of human psychology by bar and restaurant owners. Most people, when dining with a date, will never order the least expensive bottle of wine on the menu for fear of looking cheap. Instead, they will opt for the second least expensive wine to cover their bases. According to Time Magazine, “restaurateurs know this behavior well, and so they often put the heftiest markup on that second-cheapest bottle.” In fact, the cheapest bottle on the restaurant’s menu might actually cost more if you bought the same thing at a package store. The best course of action is deciding upon a wine that you objectively enjoy drinking (regardless of where you are) and order that without regard for the psychological pricing tactics of restaurants and bars.

Hotel Mini-Bars

Anyone who has ever paid $2.00 for a minuscule bag of Doritos is already nodding their head in agreement. It’s true: hotel mini-bars are one of the biggest ripoffs around. Here, again, human psychology is taken into account by the hotel operators doing the pricing. Years of experience have demonstrated that the typical hotel guest is tired and weary from a day or more of traveling. Once they arrive, the last thing they want to do is get back into the car and drive around a strange new area looking for a convenience store. In fact, they are so loathe to venture out on the road that paying 1,300% more than usual for candy and soda starts to look like a decent idea after all. Rather than paying such inflated prices, just anticipate that you will want snacks in advance and stop off somewhere before checking in.

All You Can Eat Buffets

All you can eat buffets thrive on an all too appealing sales pitch: pay once, eat all you want. It might seem difficult at first to find fault with such a generous offer. However, buffet operators do not offer that deal because they’re generous – they offer it because they know their numbers and study their customers. While the typical buffet charges somewhere between $12-$15, they know that that the average customer is not likely to eat very much more than they would’ve purchased for $7 or $8 at McDonalds, despite the fact that they can if they choose to. Furthermore, it’s questionable whether the quality of the food being served is much better than that of a fast food restaurant. Therefore, what often ends up happening is that a buffet’s customers pay for the ability to eat twice as much as they actually eat, on average.

Premium Gasoline

This one is sure to draw the ire of at least a few auto buffs. For whatever reason, many people believe that filling up with premium grade gasoline is somehow “better” for their car, or even that it “cleans out the engine.” Others actually believe that it is essential to put premium gas in their car and that it will malfunction if you try to run it on anything less. For most drivers, nothing could be further from the truth. Just check your car’s owners manual. If you need to use premium gas for a legitimate, mechanical reason, it will be stated in the manual so many times that it will be impossible to miss. Luxury cars (like Cadillacs, for example) often require premium gas because their high performance engines require higher octane – that is, slower burning – fuel. But if your owners manual makes no mention of it, you are simply wasting money on each premium gallon you purchase.

Actively Managed Investments

In his book I Will Teach You to Be Rich, personal finance blogger Ramit Sethi writes that “fund managers fail to beat the market 75% of the time.” Not only do they fail to beat the market, Sethi writes, “but they actually charge a fee to do this.” With such a lousy track record of performance, one might expect mutual fund managers to lower the fees they charge. Unfortunately, nothing of the sort is true. It is common for mutual fund managers to charge 1.5%-3% on however much money you invest into their funds. It might not sound like much, but a 2% expense ratio on a $10,000 portfolio means $200 out of your pocket at the end of the year. Index funds, on the other hands, have few or no fees and generally at least match (if not slightly beat) the overall market’s performance year in and year out.

In-Room Movies

As if gouging you at the mini-bar wasn’t enough, hotels are also happy to help themselves to your money via in-room movie sales. While there’s certainly nothing wrong with offering such a service, the rates charged are hardly what one would call competitive – as much as $10-$15 for a single movie, according to CNN. A Redbox machine, by contrast, will rent you a DVD for as little as $1 a night. A NetFlix account isn’t much more expensive, and streaming movies on your laptop is another inexpensive alternative. In other words, paying for in-room movie service at a hotel is just about the most expensive way to watch a movie imaginable. As with snacks and soda, it’s smarter to anticipate that you will want to watch one before checking in and make less expensive arrangements.

Health Club Memberships

While not every gym or health club membership is a raw deal, many of them are. In most cases, it’s not the price that’s unjustified but the terms of the contract itself. Bally’s Total Fitness, for instance, hides a clause in their contracts stating that you cannot cancel your membership – even if you lose your job and sincerely no longer wish to use the gym – unless you die or move to a town where there are no gyms. No exceptions are made. Consumer Affairs even reports that a man who provided “military orders sending me to Europe” was denied the ability to cancel his membership. A gym that insists upon charging someone money for a service they are not using and do not wish to use, even when they are given orders to leave the country for combat, is a ripoff in the purest sense of the word!
The service cuts aren't just necessary, they're useful. When riders can no longer tolerate miserable, ever-worsening commutes, maybe then they'll demand serious labor reform.
Raising fares may make even more sense. New York needs a top-notch transit system -- not just for today's riders, but also to maintain its national and international reputation. The city can't risk having lousy subway and bus service discourage potential future firms, residents and visitors from coming here. That's not just a path to economic ruin, but maybe the beginning of the end of New York as we know it.
If we really dislike fare hikes, and service cuts, we need to help Walder rein in costs, particularly for personnel. Straphangers, after all, are also voters -- an essential political force.
The Empire State Building

Gidday, owzit garn?...just kidding!
Hello NYC, I'm a 33 year old bloke from Adelaide, Australia. I have come here for a particular reason and that is to ask a question about your incredible city. I'm a "starving" freelance artist who has a potential client requesting a unique piece of art based upon your famous "Empire State Building" After doing some initial research I realized that I may have the wrong building in mind! Mostly because of this picture which was on the cover of an e-book about the history of the ESB which I planned on using as a reference image, amongst others. Google images yielded both these buildings, I figured they were of different stages in history, but here they are in the same shot! What am I looking at guys?

Thanyou for your time, sorry if I'm being a "dumb Ass", it's not easy being stuck here on the opposite side of the planet!

Google to offer 'ultra high-speed' broadband in US

Google is spreading its wings in yet another direction - this time as a network provider, offering super-fast broadband to thousands of US homes.

It plans to build a fibre-optic network offering speeds of up to 1Gbps (gigabit per second) to up to 500,000 homes.

It said it would compete on price with other broadband providers offering much slower speeds.

Google said the trial was about promoting killer apps that would take advantage of fast speeds.

"We planning to build and test ultra high-speed broadband networks in a small number of trial locations across the United States," the search giant said in its blog.

"We plan to offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people. We'll deliver internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today," it continued.

Russian Tea Room

I went to the Russian Tea Room last week...here's what I thought.

The place was pretty nice looking, although I didn't see very many Russian people...a bad sign.

The items on the menu were EXPENSIVE!!! Good thing it was restaurant week. I was starving....and everything seemed delicious.

It started out with an appetizer of a blinchik with some sour cream and currant inside. The dish was puny in size. I simply took the whole thing with my hand and popped it in my mouth and it was gone faster than you could look at it...Tasted pretty good, but I wish I had some more.

The main dish I chose was beef stroganoff. This was pretty good, and the beef was quite tender. This dish was also pretty small though...and for the price, I don't really think it was worth it...it also didn't taste very authentic... I don't think it was a Russian recipe...

My girlfriend got the Kiev, which I tried and it tasted pretty damn good.
A little oily though, but I won't complain about that.

After all that came the desserts. She got the cheesecake and I got the chocolate pyramid. The cheesecake, she said she made one that tasted better herself. The chocolate pyramid was extremely soft, and pretty good overall.
I still had a craving for caviar though..

So we also got some caviar of Salmon, Whitefish, and Trout. The blini in this dish tasted processed and very unappetizing. Something was off about that.

Overall, this place is all about the name and fame, and not so much about food. If you want real nice Russian food, go to brighton beach instead.

Mr McMillan states that "Spousal passes [for MTA workers, I assume] were eliminated years before I was born..."

I'll give him that, but he goes on to state:

If you fixed buses and trains, or even drove them, and helped transport about 8 million people a day, is it really fair that we get no benefit for it?...Should a McDonald's employee have to pay for the food they slave to cook?

Well Mr McMillan, and your fellow MTA cronies...the key word there is slave

As a messenger again, because of the economic downturn, i slave, walking crosstown with 20-30 lbs strapped on my back because crosstown busing SUCKS...and EVERY "signal problem" or "police action" which never is reported on your MTA's Twitter site OR your lying union's Twitter...then i find it questionable that y'all slaving....
YOUR benefit is a good-paying job that the majority of YOU, with your Lotto-attitudes [get a "job" with the city and you'll never have to WORK again] take for granted

The burger flipper @McDonald's has neither healthcare OR a retirement plan, and YOU have the audacity to compare yourself to the working class Mr McMillan?

You end you crybaby rant by saying:

...for the record, not all transit workers are wealthy people.

THAT suggests that some people are getting RICH by working for the MTA

Thursday 18th sees Dance.Here.Now welcome guests Theo and David Tort to their night. Theo, is best known as a radio personality, currently hosting weekly dance mix-shows on Sirius XM Radio and WDRE in New York. Yet his current position as one of dance music’s most influential tastemakers was not attained overnight, rather earned over the course of years working as program director and mix-show coordinator on college radio stations and then via steady club work throughout the tri-state area. It paid off catching the attention of Nervous REcords where a string of top-selling compilations followed fusing the soulful side of house vocals with ease into tougher twisted beats. In juxtaposition, David Tort is one of the most in demand Spanish artists on global electronic scene, a fact proven by 50 plus productions, and remixing a plethora of acclaimed artists including David Guetta, Ultra Naté and Barbara Tucker. As a DJ David can regularly be found on a plane jetting off to far-flung reaches – before arriving at Cielo he’s in Brazil on the first leg of his South American Tour before returning for dates in Columbia in April, with Miami, Moscow and Montreal sandwiched in between!

The Almighty Cucumber

This information was in The New York Times several weeks ago as part of their "Spotlight on the Home" series that highlighted creative and fanciful ways to solve common problems.

1. Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need every day, just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc.

2. Feeling tired in the afternoon?
Put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber. Cucumbers are a good source of B Vitamins and Carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours.

3. Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower?
Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror, it will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance.

4. Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds?
Place a few slices in a small pie tin and your garden will be free of pests all season long. The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area.

5. Looking for a fast and easy way to remove cellulite before going out or to the pool? Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumbers along your problem area for a few minutes, the photochemical in the cucumber cause the collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite. Works great on wrinkles too!!!

6. Want to avoid a hangover or terrible headache?
Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and wake up refreshed and headache free. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients the body lost, keeping everything in equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and headache!

7. Looking to fight off that afternoon or evening snacking binge?
Cucumbers have been used for centuries and often used by European trappers, traders and explores for quick meals to thwart off starvation.

8. Have an important meeting or job interview and you realize that you don't have enough time to polish your shoes?
Rub a freshly cut cucumber over the shoe, its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine that not only looks great but also repels water.

9. Out of WD 40 and need to fix a squeaky hinge?
Take a cucumber slice and rub it along the problematic hinge, and voila, the squeak is gone!

10. Stressed out and don't have time for massage, facial or visit to the spa?
Cut up an entire cucumber and place it in a boiling pot of water, the chemicals and nutrients from the cucumber with react with the boiling water and be released in the steam, creating a soothing, relaxing aroma that has been shown to reduce stress in new mothers and college students during final exams.

11. Just finish a business lunch and realize you don't have gum or mints?
Take a slice of cucumber and press it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds to eliminate bad breath, the photochemicals will kill the bacteria in your mouth responsible for causing bad breath.

12. Looking for a 'green' way to clean your faucets, sinks or stainless steel?

Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on the surface you want to clean, not only will it remove years of tarnish and bring back the shine, but is won't leave streaks and won't harm you fingers or fingernails while you clean.

13. Using a pen and made a mistake?

Take the outside of the cucumber and slowly use it to erase the pen writing, also works great on crayons and markers that the kids have used to decorate the walls!!

Pass this along to everybody you know who is looking for better and safer ways to solve life's everyday problems.

I have a good educations, gained 11 GCSEs and 3 A Levels, however I dropped out of University here in the UK.

Every year, for the past 25, the dance music industry has descended on Florida’s South Beach like a pack of locust feeding off the frenzy of hearing the year’s hottest new club releases for the first time in the presence of clubbing royalty. There’s no other place on the planet where within a few square miles you’ll see, hear and dance to just about every major DJ from the house spectrum and its various sub-genres. Although the business side of the Miami Winter Music Conference has waned in recent years, the club nights have yet to feel the pinch of recession and once again this year is no exception with a veritable plethora of pool parties and hedonistic club nights to satisfy your every need. And when the fun starts you can expect Cielo to be front and centre leading the way with a party featuring an incredible array of DJs longer then most guest lists! On Wednesday 24th Cielo comes to South Beach for what promises to be a very special night at The Vagabond (30 NE 14th St.) with Willie Graff and Nicolas Matar joined by a veritable who’s who of the clubbing world. Fresh for slots earlier in the month in Manhattan, we welcome Alex From Tokyo and Tania Vulcano, along with Cielo regulars Tedd Patterson (Vibal), Darshan Jesrani & Dennis Kane (Adult Section), Nickodemus (Turntables On The Hudson) and Behrouz (Nervous Records). While flying in from Ibiza is the iconic founding father of Balearica, DJ Pippi; Michel Cleis the mastermind behind the cult Cielo classic ‘La Mezcla’, and from Therapy Montreal we welcome Jojoflores. Finally Wagon Cookin perform what promises to be a stunning live set too. It all takes place between the hours of 10pm to 5am…see you in Miami!
This year we are planning a landmark edition of Orb Festival featuring the choicest electronic artists from around the globe in conjunction with remarkable installations and stage designs on a massive scale. Orb 2010 will host three stages of music including full psy, top underground minimal techno, and world music. As usual, festival-goers can enjoy the beautiful Orb flea market, camping sites, tribal drum circles, yoga classes, meditation, workshops, kids area, swimming, the Orb festival fire, and food court (including vegetarian and vegan cuisine).

The 2010 location, Ramblewood Rustic Resort, is conveniently located less than an hour from Baltimore’s international airport, just over an hour from Philladelphia, and only three hours from NYC - tucked away in seclusion a half mile from the nearest roads. This ideal location offers a wealth of well-maintained facilities for the enjoyment of our guests. Ramblewood also has multiple indoor and outdoor sports facilities such as the Olympic-sized swimming pool and diving Pool.

We round the month off with Playtime featuring the Groove Assassin mixing up some deep beats and disco treats on Friday 26th. The man behind the moniker is Manchester’s Nick Moss, whose alter ego has graced releases for a multitude of labels including Defected, MN2S, Jellybean and Nite Grooves. His passion for house music the driving force behind Nick’s enthusiasm for DJing and producing, drawing inspiration from disco, funk, Latin and soul which he now translates into his disco-etched house productions and equally chunky sets mix ‘n’ match the new with the old, and the underground with the cross-over.

6 Things to Do If You Hate New York Instead of Anthrax Mailings

2001's Anthrax mailer, Dr. Bruce Ivins, killed five people and then himself. The FBI's closing the case file on him today. Interestingly, the guy hated New York. Sometimes, it sucks! But there are ways around this problem.

6. Stop taking the subway. Self-explanatory, but in the event that you do derive some pleasure out of being transported by a never-timely rat-infested sweatbox staffed by people so angry you have to communicate with them in their native grumbles in order to negotiate the kind of situation that would require you to talk to them—like an unannounced service change, or your MetroCard not working, or some kind of emergency they should be attending to—which is often, go right ahead. But this is a nice place to walk. You should try walking, sometime.

5. Stop grocery shopping. Grocery shopping in this town is the goddamn worst. Whole Foods is essentially the sixth circle of the Inferno. The Park Slope Co-Op is basically an oppressive Communist hierarchy of people who will make you feel bad for eating everything but AssOats and Dayboat Bananas and Dirt-Strewn Organic Free-Trade Hormone-Free Tomatillos. Trader Joe's teases you with really great looking food that's cheap but as it turns out mostly tastes like shit. Also, more lines. Gristedes or Grosstedes or whatever you call it, it's an exercise in the restraint of your gag reflex, because they all smell like someone just barfed an entire bender of Pineapple Rum all over the front door. Same with Key Foods, because they're basically the same, but Key Foods is just out of reach of where you live, making schlepping your groceries a giant pain in the ass. And Fresh Direct is cool if you enjoy the routine of having to break down the 40 cardboard boxes that were required to deliver you a bottle of seltzer and a T-Bone you're not going to cook anyway. Just eat out. All the time. For every meal. Life will get better.

4. Stop reading the newspaper. If you have any common sense about you, the Sunday Styles routinely does bad things to your blood pressure, and you know, Thomas L. Friedman and Maureen Dowd and all the other absurd shit at the New York Times. The New York Post is meant to make you angry no matter who you are, and the New York Daily Snooze is just kind of there. The Wall Street Journal's now owned by Rupert Murdoch so you might as well just read the New York Post from five feet away and save yourself like what a buck? Whatever. And unless you already read The New York Observer you'll probably find something mean to say about it, starting with it's pink hue.

3. Avoid our sports teams. Ivins actually expressed his hatred for the Yankees in writing. Hating the Yankees is no reason to go postal, because everyone else in America hates the Yankees without freaking the fuck out, no? That said, New York's sports teams are the absolute worst. The Mets are patently depressing. The Yankees have the highest payroll in baseball, finally win their first championship in ten years, and then let their MVP get snapped up by the Angels. Also, they're owned by the Steinbrenners, who are assholes. Also, A-Rod thinks he's a centaur. The Knicks aren't going to not suck for another five years, at least, and also, they're owned by Jimmy Dolan, who's an asshole. Our hockey teams might be good but nobody really cares about hockey enough to know if this is true or not. The Jets and the Giants are kinda okay but you have to go to New Jersey to see them play, but nobody wants a stadium in Manhattan, with good reason. But also, Jets fans are total goons. You're probably just better foregoing professional sports altogether in this town.

2. Sell out. This is a pretty decent place to live no matter what, because everything's pretty neat and we have some pretty neat stuff, but you know what makes New York even better? Money. Lots of money. Money is awesome in this town. You know what's cool? An apartment that's kinda close to Manhattan that isn't a shoebox and doesn't try to routinely kill you via electric fire or rodents serving as inspirations for supporting roles in Korean monster movies. You know what's cooler? A townhouse in the West Village that's so whimsical if you look at it too long your face will collapse. Hate the press? Just buy a newspaper; they're basically all for sale right now on the cheap, anyway. Money solves lots of problems, and it solves a lot more problems in New York than anywhere else, because this city is basically nothing but problems.

1. Fuckoff. If you hate it so much here, why don't you just move? Move to Berlin! Lots of ex-pats still think Berlin is great. Or find the next Berlin! Or go to LA! Or Jersey! You can find yourself somewhere. But the last thing New Yorkers need are people who constantly complain about how much this city sucks. Because we have enough shit to deal with, thanks..

“I’ve starting the New Year by getting my inspiration back,” reflects Tedd Patterson whose Vibal night returns to Cielo on Saturday 6th and is never devoid of inspiration. “Somewhere along the way, I lost some of it. Traveling around the world and playing in the big rooms is exciting as hell but it can really distract you from your roots if you let it. So recently I’ve been revisiting the classics and getting some inspiration from my roots. My love for funk, soul and disco is as pure and strong as it’s ever been. I still live for the big room anthems, but there has got to be a way to bring ‘feeling’ back to the floor…” Hear for yourself as the irrepressible man from the South revisits his youth and educates the masses in true Tedd Patterson-style.

Tell the MTA NO!

Well it's too late to get the troops out in White Plains and Carle Place, but everywhere else in the city will be having MTA hearings in the upcoming days

The reason WHY I didn't enclose this notification in my Notes from the Underground section is because the proposed MTA cuts will effect everyone in this city, including tourists, for years to come!

The Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1056 was handing out flyers, I assume, since there was one sitting on the living room table when I came home.

In the union flyer they advocate that you insist the MTA uses federal stimulus funds to prevent cuts in service--WRONG--the Second Avenue Subway, which has been on the drawing board for almost a hundred years, is THE biggest drain on MTA fiscal resources.

In the end, the Second Avenue Subway will cost a minimum of $100 billion to service NYC's richest sector...Jay Walder wants to make buses fashionable--THIS is the sector of the city where his dream can come true--saving the MTA billions

And WHAT should we do with the already excavated three to four blocks on Second Avenue, at the cost of how many billion$--well HEY--Walder and the MTA Über brass can use it for office space...convert those offices on Madison Avenue in mid-town to a hotel that could compete with the Roosevelt

Burned Brick Metropolis

I was taking the Fung Wah bus from New York to Boston. Sometime after entering Queens--and not sure if I was in the Bronx yet--I saw an amazing skyline view. It was a collection of at least twenty buildings of varying sizes and heights, that if silhouetted would look just like a polished city skyline. Instead of glass, metal and stone, every building was some shade of brown brick and most looked old or dirty. They all had small, uniform windows, like you see in public housing, but they seemed too tall and too different. When I passed them on the way to Boston they were on my left, and when I passed them on the way to New York they were on my right. They were far enough away to appear as a skyline.

Coop City seems possible, but what road could I have been on to see them from this vantage point? Could I have been looking at East Harlem?

Pubs, Bars and Karaoke! Theatre District.

Good Morning All!

I am visiting NYC in March, and it is my first ever time to the USA.

I have dreamed of this ever since being a child, watching all the movies - awe struck!

I am celebrating my 40th in March and decided that it was time to visit!

My Wife and I will be staying in Times Square, and being a Brit from Liverpool, I like to have a sing song on the Karaoke....like you do!

I would love to be able to visit a Pub or Bar or Restaurant in Manhattan area where I can just walk in, order a beer, then let loose on the Karaoke ( Probably the old cliche of 'New York,New York...... '.

So there in lies my question.... Does anybody know of any good Bars, that you do not have to book a karaoke booth, that I can just walk in off the street, Grab a Bud, then have a sing on the karaoke?

Thanks in advance for any help, It's really appreciated!

Matt - Liverpool/United Kingdom

Moving to NYC: School and other questions...

First Post, haven't had much time to poke around the site but I'm hoping you guys can weigh in on some questions.

I'm 22, going towards my 6th year in the Army and currently deployed to Iraq. I'll be finishing this tour this October and getting out of the Army the following August. Even though its so far away, I want to move to NYC and do it right, not fall on my face.

I've lived all over growing up from Munich to both east and west coasts of the states but of all the places I've been, nothing has hooked like NYC. I've got a mad love for the place and since I've been all over with no real "home", I've decided to make it mine. I know Brooklyn and Manhattan pretty well, I've been to the city some 20 times, usually couch-surfing with good friends in Carrol Gardens. I'll be there for mid tour leave in just a couple weeks. I know how to visit NY very well, but not how to live there.

I intend to finish school in the city, the GI Bill will pay for college and provides 2500 for rent. I want to be a journalist/photographer and have no idea how to get my foot in the scene but I imagine the market is flooded. Does anyone work in this type of field? Any colleges to recommend? Avoid?

I'm also married and the wife has a business degree. We both have experience in the intelligence fields, again, any input? We are hoping to come to the city with 30k at least as a cushion. I'm wondering about moving costs, taxes. I know you dont need a car but is it worth having one?

I'm having a tough time at the moment listing questions, but what should I know? What do you wish you knew? I know the city, just not how to live there.

I've got almost two years to do it right. Thanks in advance for the help

Bike Rental at Central Park

Riding Bicycle at Central Park
We had a wonderful time riding through Central Park with our rental bikes. The views were amazing.Central Park is a wonderful land in New York City.Park is huge if you walking, you need at least 1 day to finish everything. If you have a bike you need 3-4 hours. You can get more information where you have to start, there is a tourism information desk at the Columbus Circle entrance and also don't forget your free maps. Strawberry Field,Bethesda Terrace,Cherry Hill,Shep Meadow, and more more.Of course if you are a Movie fanatic like my wife, you will remember a lot of movie shooting places at the Central Park. Bicycle Shop has best rates, quality equipment, experienced staff members and convenient location. We definitely go back to this store again.

Friday, March 19th | Cielo Presents Tania Vulcano, Tato, Willie Graff & Nicolas Matar

On Friday 19th, Cielo’s Willie Graff and Nicolas Matar welcome Tania Vulcano and Tato to the DJ booth. Tania hails from Uruguay, but has lived in Ibiza for the last 10-years where she’s made the white island her own. With residencies at Space and DC 10’s infamous Circoloco night she’s truly cemented herself on the international stage playing alongside such legends of house as Danny Tenaglia and Fatboy Slim. Vulcano's unique vibe takes its strength from her surname (yes it’s her real name) as she delivers relentless, flowing rhythm in a journey into true deep underground sounds that go from deep funky house to percussive tribal affairs. Her energy is evident in each session winning crowds over with her incessant foundation of quality house music. Tato, the man named Tomas Estaben, is by her side both professionally and personally – the fellow Circoloco resident is also her boyfriend, and the two are partners in the Isgud record label that specializes in deep and hypnotic house of the finest degree. Tato has previously collaborating with Charles Webster and Pig & Dan, and is known for painting soundscapes crafted from dreamy orchestration and near chilled neo-techno melodies.

Friday, March 12th | Turntables on the Hudson Presents DJ Smash & DJ Center at Cielo

Friday 12th promises to be another musically charged night as Turntables On The Hudson returns with DJ Smash & DJ Center as your deck generals for the night. Manhattan’s DJ Smash (or Wayne Hunter to his mum) is an internationally respected DJ, music producer and project consultant, with an amazing list of remix credits to his name including reworking singles by such legendary figures as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Bobby McFerrin, Roy Ayers, Herbie Hancock, Donald Byrd and Dizzy Gillespie. The man with the Midas touch for reimaging classics from the past and transforming them into contemporary offerings that bridge the generation divide is partnered for Turntables On The Hudson with the equally eclectic DJ Center. The Romanian-born, New York-bred artist first cut his teeth on '90s hip-hop, despite being mentored as a jazz musician. “With that foundation, I never separated music by genres. My influences were, and still are, wide open,” states Center, reflecting on his musical upbringing and insatiable appetite for rap, jazz and hard-bop with a global outlook and immigrant roots. Next up is his production debut with the album, ‘Everything In Time’ – a ride across multiple genres, woven by lush piano chords, warm basslines, boom-bap drum patterns, flying tambourines and soaring horns. A night of seductive funk grooves and edifyingly rich sonic soundscapes are promised.

Bag lost, now stolen

Hi,

I was in New York for what was to be the most amazing Valentines weekend which kicked off with a night lights bus tour.

On the eve of Valentines (13th) we got off the bus and realised our bag was still on it! So stupid, it was a bitter cold evening, we were on the open air back seats, bag in the back rack, and just shivering with cold, so in the dark we quickly changed seats at traffic lights to a warmer spot further down the bus, minus the bag.

My bag contained my life, passport, id card, drivers license, medical card etc along with personal possessions that are irreplaceable along with precious photos, we hate ourselves for being so stupid, I guess the jet lag and bitter coldness numbed our senses!

We immediately informed a police officer as we realised the loss as soon as the bus drove away at 9.30pm, he told us to go to their office in Madame Taussauds which we did, the staff said they could not do anything (why could she not radio the driver) she said we had to wait until lost property opened at 8am the next morning.
With restaurant plans aborted we had a fraught night, but knew we were last off the night bus and we were told it went straight to an over night depot in Brooklyn, we had a glimmer of hope it would be handed in by staff.

The next morning at 8am we were at their central office and told nothing had been found by overnight cleaners, or the driver or tour guide, but they said they had no idea who the tour guide or driver or number of the bus that had been doing the tour that previous evening, I found it hard to stomach and was too emotional to talk or eat, I just wanted to be sick, we had paid to have a romantic cruise that day, followed by a stroll in Central Park, we spent it in emotional turmoil and 4 NYPD precincts!

The office manager told me that every bus would be searched before it went out on the streets, which mean that no member of public could of been in contact with my bag, and I believe if another tourist found the bag it would of been handed in, I have to accept the fact it has been stolen as the company say that no bag was handed in by staff.

My husband had to board the plane on the 15th as planned, and I had to say goodbye to him as I had to wait until after Presidents day to get emergency travel passport, there were many people queuing for travel documents as many passports had been stolen over the weekend.

I guess this happens in New York, like any other city, but I am just so upset it happened this way, I am having nightmares, panic attacks and suffering anxiety and physically feel sick that someone else has my identity, my photos, my valuables, my life.

I am not giving up, I keep emailing the company and ringing police central office, does anyone have any ideas or thoughts about what else I can do...Please...

My taxi driver said if it was a good thief he would return the bag minus the valuables, I said I had better hope that it was a 'good' thief then!!

Thanks for reading this

Thursday, March 4th | Dance.Here.Now. Presents Bad Boy Bill at Cielo

It’s with Chicago we begin and Thursday 4th as Dance.Here.Now presents a night in the company of Bad Boy Bill. To call the Chi-Town born and raised DJ accomplished would be a bit of an understatement. In addition to being voted America’s favorite DJ by BPM magazine, he’s also one of the co-founders of Beatport; the leader in electronic dance music downloads. That might be enough success for some, but not for this world-renowned DJ who also has two decades of globetrotting DJ work under his belt, and a dozen of acclaimed compilations featuring his infamous quick-mix skills. Last year Bill finally found time to release first full-length artist album. Aptly titled, ‘The Album’, it was everything you would hope for from a man on a mission to shake things up: adventurous, experimental, fresh, and yet authentic with his signature electronic edge layered into every track. “People are surprised because its different than what they probably expect from me,” says the Bad Boy about his unique production that seamlessly weaves his crystalline electronic edge into rock, hip-hop, and rap and features an equally eclectic selection of guests from Duran Duran’s John Taylor to JJ Flores and Steve Smooth.

I couldn't get my Flip Video out quick enough to capture all the action, so let me just ramble on a bit about what happened...

Yesterday NYC was hit with it's third blizzard of February, and the guy in the blue vest was shoveling snow in front of Benjamins, a restaurant on Second Avenue and this frail little old lady walked by him and attempted to cross the street. There was a good six inches of slush on 33rd Street, slippery for someone in their prime, treacherous for somebody her age!

He stopped shoveling and helped her across the street...and that little pathway on the other side of the street did not exist until he shoveled it

As you can see, he immediately asked if the video was gonna be on YouTube, and then he shouts out the name of his establishment...sure sign of a happy worker, and when workers are that happy with their company then you KNOW that the service is going to be excellent

So I went to their site to view the menu, and the reviews for their establishment were generally great, except for the one contrarian you'll always find...and whilst I haven't ate there yet...I look forward to doing so. That guy in the blue vest helping that old lady across the street makes me curious as to whether their food is as good as their workers' hearts

2014 Super Bowl?

Get your long johns ready. Arizona has dropped out of the bidding for the 2014 Super Bowl — the one to be awarded in May — which leaves the new stadium at the Meadowlands as the clear front-runner to get the game.

Other sites bidding for it are South Florida and Tampa, which have hosted the last two Super Bowls. A victory for the Meadowlands seemed like a foregone conclusion when owners waived the weather requirement — temperate weather or a roofed stadium for the game.

The bid for the game has been presented as a joint venture by the Giants and Jets and the game will be awarded in May. The game would be a one time event, a reward to the teams for building a new stadium, and an opportunity for the N.F.L. to put the game in the nation’s biggest media market. Dallas hosts the Super Bowl next year, followed by Indianapolis and New Orleans.

Let's do it, Giants built new stadium just for that event! If you like Florida and get cold easily, just watch it on the TV. It will be great!

MTA Midget train agenda...

Jay Walder---Welcome to our nightmare

Okay Mr Walder, welcome back to NYC...alas, like President Obama, you're inheriting a system that is severely broken!

In all your press, I've noticed that you're against Mayor-for-Life Bloomberg's "free ride" campaign proposal...that should extend to MTA employees! Postal workers don't get free stamps, so why should MTA employees? The only exception I can see to the free ride rule would be firefighters and police men.

The other day the MTA was crowing about how ALL their escalators were working...counted two today that weren't, the most notable one was the escalator on the 6 to the E/V tonight. I am almost sure that the MTA subcontracts escalator repairs to a private contractor---idea---how about sending some MTA employees to escalator repair school?

Years ago, I remember there was some kid who drove the trains up and down the Franklin Avenue shuttle line, so "motorman" is not a skilled position, and "conductor" even less so! This may sound racist, but being a Jamaicarican maybe it won't---conductors SHOULD be able to speak in understandable English?

And you should investigates some of these conundrums:

Twenty years ago you could go from Jamaica Center to the World Trade Center in 55 minute...NOW you can't make the same trip from Jamaica Center to 42nd Street in that time!

20 years ago there was no delay INTO Jamaica Center due to "congestion"...NOW it takes ten minutes, minimum, to go from Sutphin Blvd to Jamaica Center...no matter what time of day or night!

WHY do the new subway cars, which seat THREE can only seat TWO MTA workers?

As long as transit "workers" ride for free...shouldn't they give up their seats for PAYING CUSTOMERS?

There's an old addage---Get a job with the city is like winning the lottery...you'll NEVER have to work again---are you gonna DISCOURAGE this mentality???

As Matt Drudge would say, [these complaints ARE] developing....
