spyrouNYC's Walking Tour of NYC

Hi, all...

I am posting this thread due to the demand for suggestions of how to see NYC by newcomers who may be visiting the Big Apple for the first time, and may want a few ideas. Bear in mind, this is what I did on my own, and I'm not saying you SHOULD do these things... only that if you wish to, this is what I did, and how I did it, lol. Everything I did, I did while on a budget, so nothing I mention here is in any way expensive. Enjoy. Below is a short budgetary breakdown, to start...

7-Day Unlimited Ride MetroCard = $27.00

Daily Lunch Allowance = $10.00

Daily Dinner Allowance = $20.00

NYC Taxi Fares:

--- Initial Fare = $2.50
--- Each 1/5 Mile = $0.40
--- Each 1 Minute Idle = $0.40
--- Peak Surcharge = $1.00 (after 4pm until 8pm Mon-Fri)
--- Night Surcharge = $0.50 (after 8pm until 6am)
--- Extra Riders = FREE
--- Tolls = Any Applicable Toll Fees
--- Tip = 15%

Empire State Building Observatory Ticket = $18.45 (Adult)

Primary (Sole) Subway Line Used = Number 1 Line - MANHATTAN Stops Used Listed Below:

- 103 Street / Broadway
- Times Square-42 Street / 7 Avenue-Broadway
- 34 Street-Penn Station / 7 Avenue
- South Ferry

Now that all that is out of the way... on to the actual itinerary.

DAY ONE: MIDTOWN

You can choose to get off at either Times Square, or Penn Station. The first time I arrived in NYC, in 2004, the friend who was showing me around had us exit at Penn Station, where after a short walk and escalator ride, I got my very first glimpse of NYC ever...

I took my first steps on NYC soil at the exit/entrance to Penn Station, on West 33rd and 7th Avenue. Instantly, the enormity of the city's scale struck me, as I was bombarded by the trademark NYC sounds of taxi horns honking, NYPD sirens, and the bustle of the pedestrian crowds. The sheer size of the LCD screens throughout the surrounding buildings was almost unreal to me, at first, and it truly felt like being in a canyon of concrete, glass, and brick, looking up at the skyscrapers towering above me, at every angle. I had expected the LCD screens with their advertisements to be loud, and make a lot of sound, but the fact that they were all totally silent, gave them a kind of eerie ominous feel, as they sat mounted upon the various buildings, with only the sounds of traffic below. I was also instantly assaulted by the strong smells of various foods, from the numerous street carts. As I looked to my left, further down 7th Avenue, I could see steam/smoke rising, from the various orange and white cone-stacks on the road, and could not help but smile... NYC was in every detail, exactly how I had seen it in movies and on TV. I was actually not expecting that at all, because every other place I've ever been to has been different than how you see it on the screen.

Instantly, I was in love with the place... I felt as if I had finally truly come home, even though at first, the sheer scale of everything was a bit intimidating. The city truly has a vibe all its own. So, I had to begin exploring Midtown, before I did anything else... I was too excited to do otherwise. First thing would be food, though... because I was hungry. I remember that I decided to go into a Jewish deli in Times Square... it MAY have been the Time Square Deli, but I honestly don't know the name of it. But I remember it, because of the sheer size of the bagel I got... the thing had to be the diameter of a hubcap, and was piled with enough cream cheese to layer a cake with. And, man... was it GOOD! So, after that, I went walking around Times Square, to do some exploring. You cannot really "structure" a tour of Times Square, as it is a very chaotic place, but in a good way. There will be much for you to see and do, and you will no doubt stop midpoint, at any given location, to explore something you just spotted. The best approach, if you want any semblance of order, would be to simply start on one side of the street, and then work your way back on the other.

Around Times Square, you will be able to find NYPD officers on horseback. I honestly see no reason for this, save for the tourist draw of it. But the horses are indeed very beautiful, and the NYPD officers are always there to chat with you, and offer a smile, and give you any travel pointers you may need. NYPD officers are truly among the most personable cops I have ever encountered, so don't be afraid to approach them, and say hello, if anything else. There is an NYPD station in Times Square, as well as an armed forces recruiting station. You have a wide variety of restaurants, including Olive Garden, TGI Friday's, and of course, McDonald's, lol. Hey, if you're on a budget, or visiting with a load of children, you'll be thankful for McDonald's wallet-friendly menu! For shopping, if you have kids, there is a GIANT Toys R Us, and also the Virgin Megastore. No shortage of places to shop. You also have the ABC News studios, where you can watch Good Morning America being filmed, or watch the news scroll by on the Jumbotron. You can go over to the TKTS tent/booth, and buy tickets to a Broadway show. And of course, there is the large tower where the Coca-Cola sign and the New Year's Eve ball are. You will EASILY spend half a day, if not more, in Times Square.

When I was done with the main area of Times Square, I decided to just pick a direction, and start walking that way, lol. So I began to walk (I don't recall which streets I took), until I found myself in an area called Little Brazil, lol. I remember that at that point, it began to rain, and I took refuge inside a small Burger King, and had lunch there, before venturing out again. There was also an area I found, that was the open entryway to a building, with a water fountain, where I sat, to relax for a few minutes. I don't remember where this building was, but I would love to find it again. I know only that it was a kind of rust-colored marble building, and had a water fountain, in the open, with the entrance behind it. I remember it was relaxing to just sit there, and watch the cars and people go by.

The next thing I wanted to do, was do the Empire State Building. When I first got there, it was pouring rain, but by the time I got to the top of the building, the clouds had parted, and sunlight began to stream down over the metropolis. The wait to get up to the observation deck IS long, but the view is SO worth it. You cannot truly appreciate the awesome scope of NYC's size, until you see it from the top of the Empire State Building. You look over the deck, to the vast cityscape, and see it split by a vast carpet of green, surrounded by soaring concrete and steel buildings, as both park and city seem to vanish into the haze of the horizon. Look to the other direction, and you can see the proud Statue of Liberty, as a mere speck, in thew distance.

It ought be noted that I walked to EVERY place I went to, in Midtown. Midtown is incredibly walkable. New Yorkers walk fast, and with my top walking speed of 5 mph, I found everything in Midtown very easily accessible by foot. However, if you have small children, it may all be too much for them, so in that case, you may wish to use the subway or a taxi, to get from one place to the other. But if you can walk... it's totally free, and you'll be able to truly appreciate everything better. A general rule of NYC conduct, is not to walk slowly... people will just pass you by, and even run into/bump against you, if you do. Keep pace with the natives. It's also considered impolite to pause in the middle of the sidewalk, and carry on a conversation... if you do, you ought to do it against the wall of a building, or away from the main pedestrian traffic. New Yorkers carry backpacks with them, so you may wish to have one with you, to keep all your essentials in, so you always have what you need.

The next post will detail Rockefeller Center, as well as the subway areas, because there is also much to see and do there.

A New York City memorabilia item

Hello, my name is Steven, and I am new to ForumNYC. Below, are a few pictures that I own of a particular pedestrian signal that, in my opinion, is a New York City memorabilia item. The pedestrian signal was manufactured by a traffic signal company named Marbelite. Marbelite was responsible for producing a majority of New York City's signals from the 1950's until the late 1970's. This is Marbelite's model LPS-20. They were once common to see on the streets of New York City from the 1960's until the early 1980's. Of course, this pedestrian signal originally seen service in New York City. Inside of its housing, there is a plaque that shows Marbelite, a serial number, a statement that says 'Property of the city of New York', and last, but not least, the year that it was manufactured in, which, by the way, was 1975. As a native from New York City and as a traffic signal collector and enthusiast, I am glad that I own this particular pedestrian signal, for that it is one of my favorite pedestrian signals that have been used in New York City. Enjoy the pictures!

Puppy Killer

Disturbing video surfaced of a girl in Bosnia gleefully hurling about six puppies into a river. Now Bosnia police are trying to locate her. When they do catch up to her, they should find out who videoed her. Whoever filmed her is just as despicable as the girl. How can anyone video someone committing such a horrific act and not try to stop her and save the puppies? Both the girl and whoever videoed her ought to be tossed into jail (or, better yet, a river).

An old buddy of mine used to have this saying which he enjoyed using whenever he witnessed someone taking advantage of a helpless individual. Jimmy used to say, "Never kick a puppy because when it grows up, and its teeth are sharp, it will remember you."

The reason I still remember his line after so many years is that Jimmy was a guy who would tackle a lion, yet he wouldn't boot a pup. He was true to his words.

In the case above, those poor pups never had the chance to grow.

Hello from a Sleep Medicine MD

Hello,
I am a board certified sleep medicine physician with an interest in educating the public on the effects of sleep disorders on once health. We spend about a third of our life sleeping and what happens in sleep does have a bearing on our health. The most common sleep disorder is Insomnia but the most serious sleep disorder is Sleep Apnea. Sleep apnea affects upto 20% of the population. People that snore, have high blood pressure, day time fatigue or mood disorders need to be tested. We are doing a free Sleep Apnea class at Slumber Services Sleep Lab monthly to educate and to answer all questions. A board certified sleep physician will be available to answer questions. You can call Slumber Services Sleep Lab at 718 946 5500 to register for the free Sleep Apnea and CPAP class. Sleep well 4 a better life.

Eataly Opens In NYC: The Beginning Of A European Food Market Wave For The US?

The first US branch of the high-end Italian food market Eataly opened today in New York City. PSFK visited prior to the official opening of the doors and took in the sights and smells. Food culture in NYC has grown to rival fashion and Eataly’s debut in the city signals what could be the beginning of a competitive upscale grocery battle. How serious is Eataly about retaining the character of their other European branches in the US? They are shipping the same yeast used in the bread they bake in Italy over to the US to make sure the quality is the same. But that doesn’t mean that everything for sale in the nearly 50,000 square foot store is imported. Eataly is purchasing produce from local farmers.

It doesn’t take long once inside to become overwhelmed with the presentation and selection. Eataly is more like a retail theater and temple to food as it is a store. Separate departments around the store feature different product categories. Surrounding these are service counters including a butcher, a fishmonger, fresh pasta, artisan cheese, cured meats, and hand-made mozzarella. Our favorite has to be the ‘Vegetable Butcher’ stand where fresh produce can be cleaned and cut to the customers’ request. They also have several large glass containers with fresh potatoes, beans and artichokes already pre-washed, soaked, and ready to be cooked.
Eataly also has a range of restaurants inside including Pizzeria Rossopomodoro run by two chefs direct from Naples, Italy. Il Manzo is an 80 seat white-tablecloth Italian steakhouse which takes reservations. The other draw is likely to be the soon to open 300-seat rooftop beer garden which is the first included in any of the Eataly stores. Located on the 15 floor and accessible through an elevator in the store, it should have great views of the adjacent Madison Square Park and Flatiron Building.
BOBINA

opening set by
ASTADA

Got cred? Bobina’s name means “reel-to-reel” in Russian, so you know he knows what’s up. The 28-year-old DJ/producer/radio host is the hottest thing to come out of Russia since Anna Kournikova. His style is hands-in-the-air, walloping, big-room trance. It’s won the favor of guys like Ferry Corsten, who calls him “one of Russia’s most talented producers.”

Please Help Save Monkeys From NASA Radiation Experiments

I just wanted to bring this up to New Yorkers as they plan to use these cruel and unnecessary experiments at Brookhaven laboratory in NY. Even if you don't care about squirrel monkeys, or animals rights issues, as a taxpayer, you should be concerned about these barbaric experiments when there are so many more humane technologically advanced alternatives already available.

Australia, and nations throughout Europe have banned such experiments. And legendary Paul McCartney has spoke out.
http://blog.peta.org/archives/2010/08/paul_mccartneys_urgent_appeal_to_nasa.php

You can help save as many as 30 squirrel monkeys by fighting against NASA's misguided plans to fund cruel experiments in which monkeys will be blasted with radiation and imprisoned in a laboratory for the rest of their lives.

The proposed experiments would take place at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, which operates under the authority of the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE). Both NASA and the Brookhaven National Laboratory have heard your voice—now it's time for the DoE to hear your call to action as well.

To help, you can call or email:

Brazilian And Latin Sounds Romance Brooklyn's Pete's Candy Store On Sept. 14th

September 14th promises to be an exotic adventure at Brooklyn's Pete's Candy Store when singer/songwriter Maya Solovey hits the stage to take the audience on a journey to the land of Saudade, the theme for the evening. Be prepared for a night of reminiscence, love and passion as you let your thoughts go and flow while Solovey romances you with Brazilian and Latin music. To complete the experience, Solovey is bringing arepas and plantains to seduce your sense of taste prior to the performance, while you pamper yourself with the purchase of your favorite drink from the bar.

"The theme for the night -- Saudade -- is something I've always wanted to do," Solovey said. There's not usually enough time in a normal night for me to play all of my songs in Portuguese and Spanish, and my hope is that this will allow a new kind of fluidity to the evening. It's a different thing when you listen to music in a language you don't understand, because then, you listen to what the voice is saying. "Saudade" is one of the most important themes to Brazilian music and culture, and while it is said to be indescribable, the closest description is "the love that stays" when someone goes away. With this music and with this entire night, I hope to carry that theme in a way that envelops and enraptures the heart, as well as the senses."

Solovey will perform at 10:00 p.m.
As an international artist and a trilingual songwriter, Maya Solovey has merged the acoustic/folk songwriting tradition into the territories of pop, bossa nova, and even the high drama of cinematic scoring. Her music is a surprising, yet rational marriage between many cultures as she sings in Portuguese, Spanish and her native English tongue. Her new self-titled album, Maya Solovey, released July 15th, has already gathered notice from journalists and music critics. Her song "Eu Vi" was featured in a Ralph Lauren runway video for winter fashion week, while her song "Como Yo Lloro Por Ti" will be featured on a in a FIFA World Cup compilation, and another 3 songs will be featured in an upcoming shark documentary called "Shark Allies". Tom Moon, on air critic for NPR, and journalist for Rolling Stone and Spin Magazine said, "Here's a rarity: An original voice who really is original! Drawing inspiration from all over the map, Maya Solovey has developed a deep, enchanting sound that's unlike anything else out there right now." Bassy Bob Brockmann, a multiple Grammy winning producer/mixer said, "Maya Solovey is an exceptional songwriter, possessed of a voice that is haunting, soothing, and erotic all at the same time. Her music, I'm sure, will change the world."

As the story keeps unfolding, we are becoming aware that "hero" Steven Slater just might be another prima donna with reality show aspirations...but let me digress for a moment.....

WHEN i first read Miz Peyser's column, I thought she was a narrow-minded yenta bigot biting on Debbie Schlussel's devout Zionism...BTW Debbie Schlussel fans, SHE needs some MAJOR help...her site is now undergoing the MicrosoftWord-fuck that makes my first book unavailable on Kindle now...it's NOT the traffic babe
BACK to Miz Peyser...I grew up amongst the first of the ME generation...the Walkman/Atari vidiots who Dr Spock decreed must be spared the rod--but being Jamaicarican, like Pip and Joe Gargery--I was raised by hand....
I can no longer touch the rim on a basketball court [even though i was dunking when i was 5'9"], RUN a 4:17 mile, or BE the 124 lb. enforcer on our intramural hockey team at Beach Channel...the same SMALL team that won back-to-back championships against all odds--and i am now thirty pounds heavier than THAT little HOOD i was quarter of a century ago

Nice restaurant at Christmas?

Myself and my soon-to-be wife are coming to NYC for our honeymoon in December. We will be in NYC from the 20th - 26th December and I'm trying to find a really nice restaurant to take her to, either on Christmas Eve or Christmas day. Could anyone recommend a suitable restaurant? We are very flexible when it comes to food types so any recommendations would be welcome!

We are staying at the New Yorker Hotel which I believe is on 8th Ave & W 34th Street so I guess anywhere on the main island is good.

Thanks guys!

The show begins at 7pm on Sunday, September 5th at the Studio at Webster Hall, 125 East 11th Street, New York, NY 10003. This show is 19+. IZZ Lite (www.izznet.com) - Galgano brothers, Tom and John, lead a stripped down ensemble with a focus on the band’s more acoustic material. It’s a rare chance to witness a completely different take on the epic and intricate music of IZZ in this intimate setting.

Edensong (www.edensongtheband.com) - The symphonic rock sextet celebrate the release of their new EP “Echoes of Edensong” in a rare hometown performance. The band will play tracks from the new CD, their critically acclaimed debut “The Fruit Fallen” and possibly premier some new material.
Half Past Four (www.halfpastfour.com) - A first ever chance to see this up and coming creative Canadian quintet in New York: one of only two US shows.
MTA to bring back the token?

As Mssrs Dumb [Mayor-for-Life Beameberg] and DUMBER [Transit Reichskanzler Jay Walder] celebrated the completion of the drilling on the 7 line extension, only Carly Baldwin reported:

The $2.1 billion subway extension was funded entirely with city taxpayer dollars.

The other day I was coming down from 96th Street on the 6, and there was this panhandler with crutches taking a break...snorting what seemed like an amazing amount of dope, since he was snorting until slightly after 77th Street. Yeah, in the old days the time between those two stops would've been about three minutes...it's over five now

As we were pulling up to Hunter College he shook his coffee cup my way, gave me a glazed look, and I gave him a reply that'd make Chris Rock blush!

After spending $2.1 billion of OUR money, the MTA is not only looking to raise the fares more than they anticipated, but to roll back the Metrocards back to the token age!

Unfortunately NY Metro seldom publishes the full article, so you wouldn't get the full story of Kurt Boone, the messenger pictured up top here. He says, "I use that MetroCard enormously--sometimes thirty or forty times a day. I'm going to be out of business and i really don't make that much money. [ About $17,000 a year by his estimate.] This is really going to hurt messengers a lot."

Since I do mainly medical messengering, I'm transporting STAT blood for testing, tissue-typing samples for organ transplants, and drugs between hospitals when there's a sudden shortage of drugs between hospitals and all the drivers are out of town....

And then you factor in delivery people...Jay Walder's MTA is looking to cost at least 10-30 thousand people their jobs, which will further erode the tax base they can rob, and at least 10% of those will revert to crime...hopefully on the subway.

Robbing the proles to placate the pols ain't gonna cut it, the MTA has to put down the crutches, give up the dope, and stop trying to scam the public, which is getting more aware each day.

NYC Restaurant Turns Gallery: Arte Hispano En Gonzalez Y Gonzalez

A new type of art gallery called "Arte Hispano" has emerged at Gonzalez y Gonzalez, one of downtown Manhattan's hottest destinations. The NoHo-based, Mexican restaurant, bar & nightclub is putting a different spin on New York's art scene by featuring the works of local, up-&-coming Latino artists. Open to the public, Thursdays through Saturdays in the live music room, Arte Hispano will be exhibiting the works of a different artist every three months. The gallery is curated by salsa music historian Jose Abando (salsasight.com).

"We view the Arte Hispano gallery as an ideal way to support and provide exposure for Latino artists while giving our clientele the ability to enjoy beautiful works of art," said Sounni de Fontenay, General Manager for Gonzalez y Gonzalez.

The inaugural launch of Arte Hispano features the work of El Salvadorian artist Zoila Minaya, whose five woodcut prints are based on folklores & mythologies from her home country.

"The work in this series of woodcuts sprang forth from my interest in my culture's rich history and legends," explained Zoila. "I was born in El Salvador and always have had pride in my culture. Most of my work including my present efforts reflects my cultural heritage. My current woodcut prints are based on well known Salvadoran mythologies. The literary works of the famous Salvadoran author Dr. Efrain Mendez proved to be a valuable source."

Must-see Brighton Beach: 13 great things to see and do

One of New York City's most exciting assets is its ability to transport people to new worlds for the price of a subway ride. Brighton Beach is one of those worlds. Also called Little Odessa, a reference to the Ukrainian city from which many of its residents hail, the Brooklyn neighborhood is known for its tight-knit, Russian-speaking community and the colorful shops, food emporiums and restaurants (much of their signage in Cyrillic) that line Brighton Beach Avenue beneath the rumble of the elevated subway lines. Once a beach getaway for wealthy New Yorkers, the neighborhood saw its first influx of Jewish immigrants—a number of them Holocaust survivors—in the 1930s, '40s and '50s; a second wave began when the Soviet Union relaxed its emigration policy in the late 1970s and continued through its eventual dissolution in the '90s. Georgians, Armenians, Uzbekistanis and many other groups from the former Soviet Union have settled here as well, their knowledge of Russian continuing to operate as a common bond. Georgia native Gio Asatiani, who works at boardwalk hotspot Volna, praises the sense of togetherness that different ethnic groups have established in Little Odessa: "We all found something familiar here, standing with each other. We speak the same language. It's definitely a community."

It's a community unlike any other you'll find in NYC. As soon as you set foot on Brighton Beach Avenue, you'll notice that few of the lively conversations at fruit stands and on the sidewalk are in English. Liquor stores hold hard-to-find treasures like Ukrainian honey-pepper vodka; a handful of caviar stands sell the delicacy at drool-worthy prices; and stores and restaurants tend toward the decorative and plush, as if they were transplanted from the Old World. Don't be shy to peek into windowless haunts and dive into conversation with shopkeepers, who at times might seem distant. Simply tell them their place of business is "beautiful"—which it more than likely will be—and the smiles will come.

Empire State Building-Blocking 15 Penn Plaza Approved by City Council

The Mayor Bloomberg-supported 15 Penn Plaza, not to be confused with Mayor Bloomberg-approved Park 51, has now been officially approved by the City Council this afternoon 47-1. Empire State Building owner Andrew Malkin voiced concerns that the building, planned by Vornado Realty Trust, would alter the skyline by being so tall and close to the Empire State Building itself, even blocking it from certain angles. But City Council Speaker Christine Quinn explained, "Our skyline is always changing and growing. New York City is not a stagnant city."
In addition, because at this point in her career, Rose has been going strong for 10 years as a proud D.I.Y.-er and has experienced quite a few notable successes including performing at Vans Warped Tour, NXNE, & CMW along with being elected to represent the quintessential indie musician perspective in a three part interview series featured in Canadian Musician, with this album, she wanted to honour all of the artists who have come before her and touched her in a major way. From Loreena McKennitt to Metallica, only one with a well-tuned musical ear will pick up on the subtle and sometimes not-so-subtle homages that are embedded within each one of her tracks.

Returning as monthly guest of Paradizo on Saturday 25th is the incomparable John Julius Knight. The Brooklyn born house head spent his youth as a disciple at the Paradise Garage, Zanzibar Club, the Loft and Redzone worshipping at the alter of Larry Levan, Tony Humphries, David Mancuso and David Morales respectively. That sort of education money can’t buy kids, and it provided the very foundation upon which he’s successful built a career in house music, both as a recording artist and as a DJ. The latter the very reason why we keep inviting him back time and time again!

Sat, Sept 18 | Paradizo Presents Nicolas Matar Birthday Celebration @ Cielo

On Saturday 18th we wish a VERY BIG HAPPY BIRTHDAY greeting to Cielo’s main man and Paradizo host, Nicolas Matar. Known as a true connoisseur behind the turntables for playing quality music from its multifaceted house roots, Nicolas is also a quicksilver champion for supporting new music. “I’m one of these people who is a new music fanatic and I will, for a whole week listen, to hundreds of tracks,” as he explains. “I like to play a lot of new stuff. My set typically is 60 percent brand new things that people don’t even know. The other 40 percent I’ll mix other things. I really spend a lot of hours doing my homework listening to new music on a weekly basis.” That sort of dedication and attention to detail is the very foundation upon which both Cielo and his weekly Paradizo night have been built. Happy Birthday Nicolas!

Sat, Sept 11 | Paradizo Presents Jojo Flores @ Cielo

Ask Montreal’s first son of house music, Jojo Flores, what motivates him and he’s quick to share the love: “My audience, the dancers, and music lovers. I enjoy making people dance, allowing individuals the space and time to express themselves through movement on a particular night. The moments are what matter, sometimes a song I play will affect a person deeply, other times it creates a new memory or brings one back,” say the man who returns to Cielo on Saturday 11th as guest of Paradizo and fellow disciple of the good groove Nicolas Matar. “New music also motivates me, when I hear something fresh or receive an unreleased exclusive track, I try to break it – play it 2-3 times in my set so it stands out. I take pride when someone discovers new music from my performance. I like being a tastemaker. There is also the challenge of converting people who are not into house music; it is motivating since I consider soulful/deep house music to be underground, and it is not often easy to break the barrier of the masses listening to contemporary big budget advertising billboard charts,” he adds.

Friday 10th sees the return of Adult Section to the lower west side with master of eclecticism Thomas Bullock joining resident hosts Dennis Kane & Darshan Jesrani. Thomas Bullock moved to New York from England in the mid-’90s where he started A.R.E. Weapons, pioneers of the electroclash sound. He left the group a few years later to form a Balearic rock band with DJ Harvey called Map of Africa, and a punk project called Bobbie Marie, along with his now infamous Rub N Tug parties. Known for his enthusiastic and unpredictable late night sets, he also started his own record label Whatever We Want Records releasing punk and psychedelic-influenced rock and electronic music. As always Adult Section is anything but the ordinary where music genres collide and fresh and excited sounds provide the heady soundtrack to proceedings.

Sat, Sept 4 | Vibal with Tedd Patterson @ Cielo

According to Junior Boys Own’s Terry Farley “Tedd Patterson is a real New York institution; he’s from the floor. A product of the ‘90s hey day of the Sound Factory, you can hear that heritage when he plays... In my opinion a real torch bearer for all that’s fabulous and legendary about NYC.” With Tedd Patterson’s Vibal party now into its seventh year his latest challenge will be bringing the energy and passion for his Cielo night to the Internet with the launch of Vibalcast. “I’ve been thinking about doing this podcast for the longest time. It will be a mix of what I normally do at Cielo, with more of an organic reflection of my roots. I’m excited about having yet another creative outlet,” says the man who’s Vibal night returns to lower Manhattan on Saturday the 4th.

Wearing a wedding dress in a restaurant?

HI,

We are getting married in NYC on Oct 10 2010. There are only 5 in our wedding party. After the ceremony we want to eat in a restaurant, is it going to be strange if I wear my wedding dress at the table? Do couples normally do this in NYC?

If anyone can recommend a restaurant that would be great.

Thanks.

*House Dance is an upright, improvisational (non-choreographed) form of 'social dance' performed to House Music. It borrows--but has distinct roots--from many different dance styles, including jazz, tap, Hip-Hop, capoeira, Salsa, and more. The dance, perfect for nightclubs or personal self-expression, emphasizes fluid body movements that match the rhythm and tempo of the music, as well as footwork that closely follows the instrumentation of the song. House Dancing is pure freedom!

*Danny Dance is a Salt Lake City/Miami-based dancer, DJ, and producer. His love of dancing led him to become a House Music DJ, and he's now pursuing a global career as a club DJ and music producer. He teaches House Dance to kids and adults throughout his hometown and beyond.

NYC Venues

So my band is from Canada (yep, Canada) and we live about 8 hours from NYC. We've been doing pretty well up here in the north and a few promoters have been telling us to try our hand in New York. I've only been there a couple of times and only for a weekend so I really have no idea what venues we should be contacting. If anyone could shed some light it would be much appreciated. This is what we sound like - www.myspace.com/slightlyleft

Thanks a bunch.

Indian Summer/Harvest Moon Comes To Brooklyn's Pete's Candy Store On September 7th

On September 7th, Pete's Candy Store in Brooklyn will be transformed by singer/songwriter Maya Solovey into an ambiance and experience entitled "Indian Summer/Harvest Moon". Enjoy the tranquility of summer's transition to fall, and celebrate the beautiful full moon as it nears its equinox -- romantic and soothing. Not only will Solovey perform that night, she will be bringing her own home cooked food. Both the music and delicacies will relate to the "Indian Summer/Harvest Moon" theme. Solovey's menu will include cornbread, her grandmother Babushka's plum jam, and lemonade - all served up on a red and white checkered table cloth.

Solovey will perform at 10:00 p.m.
Pete's Candy Store
709 Lorimer Street
Brooklyn, NY 11211 (Williamsburg)
(718) 302-3770
http://www.petescandystore.com/home2.html
RSVP for the event: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=152167401461703

Commenting on how she selected the theme for that night, Solovey said, "At that time, we'll be holding on to the last grains and cornstalks of summer before we head into fall, so I wanted that night to have a sentimental lazy late summer feel to it. The mood will be soft, soothing, and warm with good old American traditions. And, this will be an opportunity for me to play a lot of songs that I don't usually get to play as all songs performed will be in English." Solovey writes and records in three languages - English, Spanish and Portuguese.

English/Americana Night Songlist
Summer
Heartache Blues
Under My Skin
Further West
The Most
Susannah
Better
Come Home Soon
Fine As You
American Song
Touch

MTA licensed to kill...

As I waited the usual 30 minutes for the N4 at Jamaica Center tonight, IF I was drinking with the boys after work and there was a brick around I might have hurled it at the bus as it pulled up, the driver smirking, fully cognizant that the 6:49 and 7:04 would be pulling up any minute.....

According to Heather Haddon in today's am-ny:

In a Halloween prank turned tragic, an MTA bus driver struck and killed a Bronx man who had just thrown a heavy object at the vehicle, shattering part of the front window.

Ms Haddon goes on to say that "[t]he incident was ruled an accident and the driver...was not charged."

Over the summer, some kids were walking their puppy down Merrick Boulevard and it bolted into the street...the bus I was on ran over it, and THAT never made the papers, which is understandable. From the tone of Ms Haddon's article, Luis Rivera was a BAD puppy, and since the MTA had enacted Operation Pumpkin Patch--"designed to raise awareness among drivers of their rights in case they are attacked" [all emphasis mine]--for doing what kids have been doing for over half a century!

Election Eve, and all these newspapers that found it fit to endorse Herr Mayor-for-Life Bloomberg don't think that some Hispanic kid getting intentionally run over by a bus driver in the Bronx even worth a paragraph? [Full disclosure--am-ny is owned by Newsday/Cablevision--so THAT may explain why they're not beholden to NYC/Bloomberg ]

Guess Kathy Jordan and Dominique Sharpton's bust this weekend is more important than some Hispanic kid throwing, maybe, a beer bottle or egg at a bus and getting running over by its driver

Hey! I’m a German student and I’m looking for some American test subjects for an online test. It’s a test for auditory perception. It includes 4 sound examples from a movie (from the American original version and the German dubbing version). The German and American test subjects have to listen to the sound examples and they have to appraise the effect of the speech.

The test is located on this website: http://www.user.tu-berlin.de/d.traegler/
Please take a little time to do the test. It takes only 5 minutes!
Your feedback is welcome.

Woodstock Memories

Woodstock Memories

August 15th zoomed right past me, and I forgot all about the importance of the date. It was the forty-first anniversary of the Woodstock Festival, an event that I missed but nevertheless am happy for the few friends who did attend it. My friend Patrick yet has the complete ticket he purchased some weeks in advance. He never had gotten a chance to hand the ticket to an usher because when he arrived, there weren’t any ushers around. The huge crowd had already crashed the site, and all Patrick had to do was step over a downed fence to get in. Nowadays, Patrick protects his precious ticket in a plastic folder and is torn between selling it on E-Bay and keeping it as a cherished memory.

Another friend, Joey left for the historic event with his girlfriend on Friday afternoon and returned home Sunday evening. And the night he came home from Woodstock, I just happened to be standing by the entrance of his apartment building. About 8:30 P.M., I noticed him turning the corner. He appeared really scruffy and was badly in need of a shave, shower, and clean clothes. On his back was a green army knapsack, the ones that were popular back then and sold at the old army-navy stores. I could tell Joey was beat and longed for a good nights sleep in a comfortable bed. He smiled at me and then walked into his building.

The thought of missing Woodstock bothered me so much that the following year, I made the trip to the Upstate town with some friends. It was still morning when we arrived by car, so we went for breakfast in a barn that had been converted into a restaurant. The joint was filled with long hairs and hippies, and in the center of the restaurant was a guy playing a piano and singing a Beatle’s song. After breakfast, we roamed around the town of peace and love for a few hours before heading back to Manhattan.

I’m so disappointed with myself for not going there in ‘69. How does one (who had an opportunity to go) describe not attending the Woodstock Festival? Well, to me, missing Woodstock was like dropping an easy infield pop-up that would have ended the seventh game of the World Series. And the error allowed the other team to score unearned runs to win the game and become the champions. Missing Woodstock was an terrible error one never gets over.

My nephew took me with him to the 1994 Woodstock Festival. But it might as well have been the 2094 Woodstock Festival. Different Vibes altogether. There can be only one Woodstock.

I read that you can take the subway (Q train?) to Atlantic Terminal and then catch a train to Jamaica.
My question is what train do I catch to Atlantic Terminal; and then what train am I catching to get to Jamaica and is it going to cost anything? Thanks!

Suggested Itinerary?! :-)

Hi everyone,

I am due to visit NYC for the first time in a couple of weeks with my boyfriend and I have a list of things I want to try and fit in but as I have no idea where anything is in relation to eachother, how long journey times are etc. I am struggling with creating an itinerary! I want to make every second count!

My flight lands at 13.30 at JFK (people have told us to allow 2 hours to get out of the airport, is this correct?) then we are staying at the Hudson Hotel (356 West 58th Street) and we are yet to decide how to get there. I have considered bus, metro and taxi (what would be my best bet, how long would each take and what would the cost be?)

So then we have Saturday late afternoon/evening free, Sunday (plan to go to Woodbury Common), all of Monday and Tuesday Morning (need to leave after lunch)

And here are a list of things we want to do: have a walk through central park (not a long walk, thinking maybe early one morning) visit empire state OR rockerfeller (which is best, go to Carnegie Deli, Serendipity 3 for frozen hot chocolate, Possibly Katz Deli (?), Possibly Magnolia for cupcakes, Possibly Century 21, Visit Ground Zero, Go the big department stores Macys, Dwayne Reed Pharmacy, Canal Street, Bloomingdales, Tiffany and Pandora stores. Maybe Brooklyn Bridge if we can fit it in? Food wise, gotta try a good NY pizzza/hotdog, would like to try a nice steakhouse, american style breakfast (maybe pancakes), possibly a chinese too and CRAB LEGS (love these). Maybe check out some nice cocktail type bars in the evening??

Are there any other must do/sees??

Can anyone suggest what we do on each day? And how we travel to and from the airport?

Thanks in advance

Bus to NYC

I just came back from NYC last month and got to see the Empire State Building, Times Square, etc.
I didn't stay in NYC but rather drove to New Jersey and then bus to NYC which took about 15mins for the bus ride. The hotel was a lot cheaper in New Jersey. It cost me $95/day with complementary breakfast and parking.

So for anyone of you going to NYC, I suggest staying in New Jersey but just bus to NYC. It will save you a lot of money in the long run.
